Some notes and general thoughts:
- As a general rule, things in Argentina are quite cheap, especially with the Dolar Blue modifier. It was a bit scary to be carrying so much cash, but it was definitely worth it.
Most of our money was blown on planes. It'd be nice to take the fancy buses but you need time to burn for that.
- Argentina is BIG. For this two week trip we just hit a section of the north side - we'll do a south trip later. Part of the problem is that Many flights go (or route through) Buenos aires, leading to long and/or expensive flights.
- I'd guess roughly only 1/3 of the people we met knew any english. One of the bigger mistakes of the trip was not bringing an offline Spanish to English translator. We had a bunch of problems in restaurants with spanish menus and non-english speaking waiters.
- Note for the future: If taking a picture of something that isn't self identifying, take a GPS stamped picture (with my phone). Otherwise it's pretty hard to figure out what it is, or where it is.
- Public transit was suprisingly easy to use. We took buses a lot and subways. Just use your GPS to track where you are. Taxis are the most expensive option. Hotels can usually call cheap airport shuttles for you. Driving was basically a non-option unless you drive manual.
- I was worried about Buenos Aires safety, but it's no worse than any other big city. The poor rundown areas are definitely scary (and in the case of La Boca - dangerous).
- As a general rule, I found the people to be very nice and helpful. In terms of tourist friendliness,
Puerto Rico is still #1, but Argentina would be #2.
